How to Begin Emergency Services Training

STEP 1 – Required Prerequisite Training

In order to start your Emergency Services career in the Civil Air Patrol, you must complete prerequisite training / testing.  Your key to begin participating in any emergency services exercise for the Civil Air Patrol is to complete the required following training:

• • GES 116 – General Emergency Services Introductory Training
  • ICUT – Introductory Communications User’s Training

The General Emergency Services rating is required of all individuals qualifying in emergency services and will be completed prior to commencing training of any other specialty.  Successful completion of the CAPF 116 ES Questionnaire (corrected to 100%) along with basic membership requirements qualifies the member in the General Emergency Services rating.

STEP 2 – Advance Training

Most Emergency Services qualifications in the Civil Air Patrol also require a few more training modules to complete online before going into the field.  They are as follows:

• • GES 117 – Part 1 – Extended General Emergency Services Training – Geared for Ground Teams
  • GES 117 – Part 2 – Extended General Emergency Services Training – Geared for Air Teams
  • GES 117 – Part 3 – Extended General Emergency Services Training – Geared for Mission Planning
  • ICS-100 – FEMA Training – Introduction into Incident Command System
  • ICS-700 – FEMA Training – Introduction into National Incident Command System

Some of these additional areas of study must be completed before participating in the field.  Check the qualification you are trying to achieve to see if any of them apply.

STEP 3 – Training In The Field

To begin training in the field, you must:

1. Get the commanders permission to begin training – The commander will approve your training through eServices on your personal Specialty Qualification Training Record (SQTR) for the approved training requested.
2. Print and fill in a CAPF 60-80 Permission Form for the training activity requested and bring with you when you report for training.
3. Make sure you have your CAPF 161 Emergency Information Form and any other form required for the activity.
4. Print a hard copy of the Specialty Qualification Training Record (SQTR) for the training you will be receiving and bring it with you when you report for training.
5. Once at the training site, check in with Mission Staff.
6. Find the Skills Evaluation Trainer and notify them that you are interested in training and what skills you would like to be trained in and evaluated on and give them your SQTR.
7. Complete your training.

STEP 4- After Field Training is Complete

1. Use your SQTR to input all of the information the Skills Evaluation Trainer entered into your form so it can be approved through eServices.
2. Keep the hard copy of your SQTR in a safe place for future training and / or reference.
3. If you are fully qualified, begin volunteering to put your training to use.

• MSA – Mission Staff Assistant
• CERT – Community Emergency Response Team
• MRO – Mission Radio Operator Training
• FLM – Flight Line Marshaller
• UDF – Urban Direction Finding Team Training
